I missed London Fashion Week and had to forgo several invites to some great catwalk shows. The tickets are like Hens teeth and as I sat at home or in the showroom either asleep or slumped over my desk I tried hard not to think about what I was missing and tried not to sneeze over customers as I carried on selling. The great thing is that I was able to watch several of the shows live from my couch such is the miracle of the internet. Within minutes of watching I was able to post them on nickysragtales.com which means that everyone can watch and comment.

I’ve been blogging now for a year and a half and have built up a lovely group of followers, these are people that I sometimes meet and who tell me they enjoy my posts and my occasional off beat humour. Today I had a call from someone from the Christian Loubouton company who wants to meet with me as they have recently opened in Dublin’s Brown Thomas and I’m guessing they may want me to write a piece about the them. This has made me think. Do I write just because I’m flattered to be asked? Do I write for money or a gift? The answer to both of those questions is a very definite NO. I made certain rules for myself when I started the blog and they are very simple. I only write about things I like (or don’t like) and speak my mind. I don’t accept money or gifts before writing and I certainly don’t ask for anything. Sometimes I do get gifts but they are always a surprise and not necessary. A thank you is all that is required. I love the fact that it’s my blog and I can do what I want with it. I am though starting to think about how I can monetize the blog in a way that will not compromise my ethics in any way. I would like to cover my costs at least and will perhaps consider advertising but only of products or businesses that I endorse. I think it’s time I called my Internet tech friend Rob from Lady Umbrella or tech guru Krishna De for some advice on how to go forward.

Jane Davidson is a family run business, founded in 1969 in the Grassmarket area of Edinburgh by Jane Davidson. The boutique is now run by Sarah Murray, her daughter, and is based in a Georgian townhouse in Thistle Street, discreetly located in Edinburgh’s elegant New Town and in the thick of the upmarket shopping area. The store has grown steadily since it opened on the ground floor of its current site and has expanded over 4 floors in the last 15 years. In July 2008 Jane Davidson launched their first transactional website. Unlike online only boutiques, there is a well established store behind the site. All purchases are carefully handpicked, wrapped and sent from the boutique. Customer purchases are all carefully logged so that our clients get the most from their wardrobes each year. Information on career, family and social circles is also stored so that our sales team can avoid offering a similar outfit for the same function. Regular instore events, ranging from trunk shows to jeans fitting weekends, are held monthly. A Christmas runway show is even held for the partners and husbands of clients, to assist in their gift shopping.

Now in her seventh season, Olivia Rubin launched her first womenswear line after graduating from the world-renowned Central Saint Martins College in London. Husband-and-wife team James & Gemma Wiseman (former designers for firms as diverse as Mulberry, and Nokia), opened the first Foundation shop in Stow in early 2003 (their original shop name was dropped after the name 'Foundation' appeared in a dream - Don't ask!), to offer a striking, 'hand-picked' selection of interesting clothes, homewares and accessories, by smaller, up-and-coming designers, with the emphasis on style, and above all wearability. The shop soon became a 'cult' favourite, and before long all sorts of famous, not-so-famous, and above-all wonderful customers became Foundation's friends!

Buoyed by this positive reaction, and throwing caution to the wind, a second, larger store was opened on the ground floor of a Regency building in Cheltenham's bohemian Montpellier area, some 18 months later. 4 years after that, in November 2009, Foundation took over the whole of the building, and opened a brand new showroom on the first floor (Upstairs at Foundation) showcasing even more clothing, shoes, homewares, fabrics and wallpaper.

Lara’s Boutique founded by Lara Casey, started nearly 10 years ago with its first boutique shop opening in Dame Lane, Dublin. This shop Lara planned to open with her mother but sadly she passed away the year before. However Lara still went ahead and launched the shop in her mums honour with her mum’s signature above the door to this day. The shops objective was to fill the gap in the market for quirky, fashionable designer labels and party wear. In 2003 Lara’s Boutique was flourishing and the business premises were doubled to 3,000 sq ft in size so it could cater for its expanding client base. The shop is so unique filled with chandeliers, candles and immense charm. Lara became the place to be seen to buy clothes. Every model, TV presenter and celebrity in Ireland graced Lara’s doors.

In 2005 just two years later and with over 10,000 customers Lara opened a second shop in her home town of Terenure, Dublin offering even more exclusive, high-end womenswear. She secured the exclusivity rights for the leading American brand Jovani in Ireland and this bought occasion wear to another dimension. Lara also at this time secured a regular slot styling on Irelands No 1 TV Station RTE on The Café show. This led her to work in the celebrity styling industry and one of her first jobs was styling top Irish boyband Boyzone for their first music video they recorded. This also meant customers would come from far and wide for Lara’s expert styling advice and they appreciated the passion she showed whilst picking outfits for her customers.

With Lara’s creative vision and instinctive buying skills she saw an opportunity to expand her business over the water and in 2008 she opened a shop in the chic Chiswick High Street, London. Bringing the Lara Love over the water this business has also gone from strength to strength and this year Lara launched her own fashion label Lara Couture which is a collection of 100 breathtaking occasion wear dresses with a very much red carpet look. Lara has worked on the designs for this collection for years and since the launch this autumn she has seen amazing press coverage in OK!, London Metro and She Magazine.

The key success for Christmas is planning; this does not mean endless hours planning your call to action, but making a plan for your store and staff of what you want to focus on for Christmas. It is not a case of let’s focus on everything it is all about the unique ideas you can create to really attract consumers to your business,

All of these questions need to answered before you decide your final strategy:

1. What price points will I focus on?

2. What theme will I give my store?

3. What products will I promote?

4. What unique gift ideas can I offer?

5. What’s the best location in my store to use?

No matter how large or small your store, it is crucial that these questions are asked, and that the answer appeals to your target audience.

My top tips are:

Create a simple yet effective window! Focus on the right products, if you do not have access to good window decorations, my advice; keep it minimal.
Create a gift area, somewhere people can get inspiration from.
Use aggressive signage and price points are a key idea.
Get the product positioning right.
Make the time to create an action plan with all your staff.

Product groupings are also very successful at Christmas time; they make shopping easier for your customers and focus their attention to what you want them to buy. Making a simple knit table will have much more impact than an over cluttered rail or a over complicated wall

Presentation of goods is crucial to how your customers will spend this Christmas, as not only will they want great value, they will want it shown to them in a simple, clear and visual pleasing environment. Every year Christmas comes and goes with the blink of an eye so it’s vital that we make the time for these decisions. Fran and Jane Make a Glamorous Entrance on the Kings Road

Fran and Jane made a glamorous entrance on to Kings Road in Chelsea launching their first London boutique on Thursday August 19^th 2010. The event was hosted by brand founder and owners Fran and Laura Nolan and Jane Baker, who amongst bunches of pink and white balloons greeted guests up their fabulous Fran and Jane pink carpet and into the beautiful new store.

The event was attended by some very family faces in the UK and Ireland such as MTV’s Laura Whitmore and noted Vogue fashion and reportage photographer Alistair Guy. Guests sipped on champagne to celebrate the arrival of this established Irish retail brand in to the UK market. Atmosphere was created on the night by UK solo jazz guitarist Jo Caleb who kept guests in good spirits as they nibbled on delicious canapés of mini quiches and smoked salmon bagels, vol au vents and tasty garlic and mozzarella bites.

Fran and Jane’s autumn winter 2010/11 collection was showcased at the event by models from M and P model management and was extremely well received by guests. To tempt their guests even further, Fran and Jane sent attendee’s home with juicy goodie bags containing Fran and Jane vouchers and quirky lollipops, in addition to treats from some of Fran and Jane’s new neighbours on the Kings Road such as Molton Brown and The Body Shop and also a membership gift voucher for exclusive private members club Morton’s of Berkley Square.

Fran and Jane certainly had good reason to celebrate as they have evidently already made quite the impact on the UK market and so invited their guests to join them at an after party held at Morton’s of Berkley Square.

Diet Coke Designers at Belfast FASHION WEEK 2010

This season, the bi-annual, multi-award winning fashion event which is Belfast FASHION WEEK 2010 has teamed up with Diet Coke to give fashion design students, young designers and anyone with a flair for fashion the chance to design a commercial, wearable and fashion forward garment which will end up on the catwalk.

Entrants are required to design a womenswear look for the Autumn/Winter season that encapsulates the spirit of the Diet Coke ‘Love it Light’ attitude. This can be interpreted within fashionable boundaries and changed to, for example, ‘Love it denim’, ‘Love it leather’ or ‘Love it long and glamorous’.

The winning design will be brought to life by designer to the stars Una Rodden, shown on the catwalk at the finale show at Belfast FASHION WEEK 2010 in October, photographed by leading fashion photographer Khara Pringle and featured in a fashion magazine.

The lucky designer will also walk away with a mini scholarship to a fashion course at London College of Fashion, including flights and hotel accommodation to further nurture their passion for fashion.

If you are not a budding designer not to worry Diet Coke will be pulling up at Castlecourt on 16^thOctober for Belfast FASHION WEEK 2010 in a fab 1960’s airstream Silver Palace as part of Diet Coke’s Love it Light Roadshow! Enjoy free preening and pampering at the Diet Coke Boutiquewith their nail and makeup experts from Rimmel London and Sally Hansen; hands on style advice from TV3’s Laura Cunningham and chill out at the Diet Coke Cafe while sipping on an ice cold Diet Coke!
